There's a photo of me from this week that I actually really love — standing in my garden in a brand new t-shirt, arms wide open, grinning like an idiot. Not because it's a great photo of me. But because of what's written across the front of it:
"You don't have to be great to start. But you have to start to be great. Just begin."
That line has quietly become the whole philosophy behind Totally Bliss. And it's also the reason I do something that probably makes my life harder than it needs to be: I refuse to sell anything I haven't tried, worn, used or tested myself first.
The "just begin" t-shirt, and why it's not just a t-shirt to me
This design actually started life as a mug — one of the very first "Believe & Achieve" style pieces I added to the shop, and it's quietly become one of the most-loved things I sell. When I decided to bring the same message onto a t-shirt, I didn't just approve the mockup and send it to print. I ordered myself one, wore it around the house for a few days, threw it in the wash, wore it out to see if it held its shape — and then made my daughter tell me honestly if it looked as good in real life as it did on screen.
That might sound like overkill for a t-shirt. But if I'm asking someone else — a woman starting her own "second act," rebuilding her confidence, figuring out who she is after 50 — to spend her money on something with my name behind it, the least I can do is know exactly what she's getting.
Why personal testing matters more in a small shop like mine
Totally Bliss isn't a big faceless brand. It's me and my daughter, building something real, one product at a time, in real time — and being honest about the journey rather than pretending we had it all figured out from day one. When you buy a personalised mug, an inspirational tee, or one of our digital planners, you're not buying from a warehouse. You're buying from someone who has genuinely:
- Worn the t-shirt and washed it more than once before it went live
- Used the digital planners myself in GoodNotes, page by page, before ever listing them (not all of them are designed to be printed — most are made for writing straight into digitally)
- Written the words on the mugs and journals from things I needed to hear myself, not just what I thought would sell
That's the standard I hold every single product to, whether it's £5 or £40.
It's not about being "great" — it's about starting
I'm not a big brand with a testing lab or a team of quality control people. I'm one woman who decided, later in life than most people "start," that I was going to build something of my own — a shop, a story, a small business that actually reflects what I believe. Every t-shirt, every mug, every digital planner in the Totally Bliss shop exists because I began, imperfectly, and kept going.
If that resonates with you — if you're in your own "just begin" season, whatever that looks like — this is exactly why I make what I make.
Where to find it
You can see the "Just Begin" t-shirt, the matching mug, and the rest of the inspirational range over on the Totally Bliss website. Alongside the physical products, I'm also building out a growing range of digital products — planners, journals and trackers designed for exactly this kind of new-chapter, second-act energy — which you'll find in the shop too.
Come say hi, have a look around, and if you're just beginning something of your own right now — I see you. Just begin. That's all it takes.
